It is Santayana’s prerequisite for “passionate contemplation” as this initial step in the immediacy of the experience of intuiting essence that is of particular interest to us here. It is of interest both in regard to its phenomenological character short of description or reflection as well as to its bearing upon religion and particularly upon the limited phenomenological character of mysticism. At the core of Santayana’s idea of transcendence to a spiritual attitude is the dominance and intensity of the attention of consciousness. I will address this aspect of contemplation in more detail in chapter 4.
